About IEEE

IEEE, pronounced “Eye-triple-E,” stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Established on January 1, 1963, through the merger of the AIEE (American Institute of Electrical Engineers, founded in 1884) and the IRE (Institute of Radio Engineers, founded in 1912), IEEE began with a membership of 150,000, 140,000 of whom resided in the United States.

Dedicated to advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity, IEEE has evolved from a community solely for electrical and electronics engineers into a comprehensive association serving all branches of engineering, the sciences, and anyone interested in technology. As the world’s largest technical professional society and a non-profit organization, IEEE’s mission is to foster technological innovation and excellence to improve global conditions. Over time, this mission has led to its informal redefinition as the “Institute of Engineers & Everybody Else,” reflecting its appeal across diverse scientific and technical fields.

Today, IEEE unites over 400,000 registered members worldwide, bringing together professionals from computer scientists and software developers to physicists, medical doctors, electrical and electronics engineers, and more. IEEE is committed to being essential to the global technical community, universally recognized for the contributions of technology and technical professionals in enhancing modern civilization.
